Halloween!

Delayed photo shoot from the cutest costume ever

Freezer Paper

After spending an inordinate amount of time on the mom blogs, I had to try freezer paper stencil shirts. Conclusion? They are AWESOME. So easy! Just cut out your stencil on the freezer paper, iron it on, and paint! I used acrylic paint, which seemed to work well, though many people recommend fabric paint. I made these adorable onesies using a cutout from a rubber stamp and also some stencils I bought at Michael's. I just wish I had more things I needed to make t shirts for.

During a discussion about segregation in a novel, I had a sidebar convo with a black student about whether he'd go to the white side of town. His response:

"No! Why would I go there if they don't want me? Unless...I'd only go if I needed white clothes."
Me: "what does that mean?"
Him: "You know, white people clothes. Not like you're wearing. Like slacks--not even khakis--slacks with shoes that aren't tennis shoes and shirts with stripes tucked in."
Me: "Like church clothes?"
Him: "Yeah, but not even as cool as that. But you don't wear white clothes. In high school, you didn't care. I can tell. You were just like 'we do how we do' and you were in the in crowd. Not like the other teacher I bet always held the class back asking questions."

Conclusions:
All white people don't wear white clothes, but all white clothes are lame.
I am embarrassingly proud of an 11 year old assuming I was cool in high school.

Magnets!

Latest craft push: magnets.

(upside down sticker magnets apparently. it shows as right side up before i post it!)

I need lots of magnets for my job, so I decided to try them myself. Super easy, super fun. I just went to Michael's and got 1" magnets and flat marbles/gems, like you'd use for flower arrangements. I also got quick-grip all purpose glue.

I tried a couple different things to go under the marble. With all of them, I glued the picture/cardstock to the marble, then the marble to the magnet. (I used cardstock as the background for stickers and for photos to make it sturdier.

Stickers worked best, as seen in the picture above. Photos worked ok, but I had issues with glue bubbles. I'd try pictures again, but next time using a clamp.

The worst was anything with glitter...glitter paper or glitter stickers. The glitter just didn't show well through the glass, and if I moved the backing at all the glitter released from the backing and spread throughout the glass.

All in all, a fun project that I'll keep coming back to!

Part II.2

The 2nd half of our trip mainly involved eating. Delicious, delicious eating.

Oh and maybe a little drinking...

Portland was the best city ever. We happened upon the Oregon Brewer's Festival (above) with 100's of craft breweries on display. Then there were all the cheap and scrumptious food trucks, unfortunately not pictured.

The main event of course was Voodoo Doughnut. This was one of few instances in my life where the hype was not enough for the product. We waited in line for awhile after a fun night at a arcade bar
The line was actually a lot shorter than we were warned it would be, and we ended up with this, so it was ok

One of them didn't even make it home whole.

We continued the donut tour to Seattle with Top Pot, but it was disappointing after Voodoo. We also got way too much, so that didn't help. I certainly wouldn't steal them...

In Seattle, we also enjoyed craft cheese at Beecher's

First starbucks!

And doggie sized kimonos

Part II

Pacific Northwest was a slew of eating and quirky stops.

First stop, Powell's, biggest independent book store in the world. An entire section on Lewis and Clark!

(Avoid visiting Powell's after a few glasses of wine, or (like me) you'll leave with an abundance of unneeded niche literature)

Intermission

Taylor Swift was our gateway drug to hardcore country music. We're a little disturbed that we only listen to the Pandora country station these days...

Mine

I think this may even be better than Love Story.

Part I

Ho hum, another gorgeous sunset over the Pacific...

Which is why our trip evolved (devolved?) into a factory and donut tour...

MRS. GROSSMAN'S!!

So many stickers! So fun. Me and the Asian family (who laughed at all the pictures I was taking) really enjoyed the tour. Did you know Mrs. Grossman's has the only laser sticker cutter in the world? It does.

Then there were 2 days of camping...

But more importantly, in Tillamook County, OR, the Tillamook Cheese Factory!

Hi cheese workers!

First taste of cheese curds for me. They squeak! For real! Except I was so amazed by them, I bought a bunch and was stuck eating warmed-over curds the rest of the trip. Tillie joined us after that too..
