During a discussion about segregation in a novel, I had a sidebar convo with a black student about whether he'd go to the white side of town. His response:

"No! Why would I go there if they don't want me? Unless...I'd only go if I needed white clothes."
Me: "what does that mean?"
Him: "You know, white people clothes. Not like you're wearing. Like slacks--not even khakis--slacks with shoes that aren't tennis shoes and shirts with stripes tucked in."
Me: "Like church clothes?"
Him: "Yeah, but not even as cool as that. But you don't wear white clothes. In high school, you didn't care. I can tell. You were just like 'we do how we do' and you were in the in crowd. Not like the other teacher I bet always held the class back asking questions."

Conclusions:
All white people don't wear white clothes, but all white clothes are lame.
I am embarrassingly proud of an 11 year old assuming I was cool in high school.
